Violet enters the Riders Quadrant and crosses the parapet
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail has trained to become a scribe. Her mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, orders her into the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College instead. Violet has chronic joint instability and injuries that make its physical tests particularly dangerous.
Her older sister Mira gives her protective armor made with dragon scales and warns her about Xaden Riorson. His father, Fen, led the defeated Tyrrish rebellion. Violet believes Fen killed her brother Brennan, and her mother was involved in the execution of the rebels.
Before crossing the narrow parapet, Violet trades one boot with Rhiannon so that both have better footing. Their fellow candidate Dylan falls to his death. Jack Barlowe threatens Violet and pursues her across, but she reaches the other side and holds him off with a dagger.
Dain recruits Violet into his squad; Xaden becomes her wingleader
Violet reunites with her childhood friend Dain Aetos, a second-year squad leader. He takes Violet and Rhiannon into his squad but repeatedly urges Violet to transfer to the Scribe Quadrant. Xaden has the squad moved into Fourth Wing, which he commands.
Xaden and the other children of executed rebels carry rebellion relics on their arms and have been forced into rider service. Violet overhears them meeting in secret. She does not report them, and Xaden does not kill her for knowing about it.
Violet struggles in combat training. She uses her knowledge of plants to weaken scheduled opponents before matches and makes a training arrangement with Rhiannon and Sawyer. Ridoc also becomes one of her friends. She learns that riders develop individual magical abilities, called signets, through their dragons; Dain can read recent memories by touching someone's face.
Violet passes the Gauntlet
The cadets train for the Gauntlet, an obstacle course leading up a cliff. Violet cannot complete every obstacle in the standard way because of her height and joints. She develops alternate routes and uses her daggers to help her climb.
Wingleader Amber accuses her of cheating. Violet cites the rules, and Xaden accepts her method. She passes and proceeds to Presentation, where the dragons inspect the surviving cadets before Threshing.
At Threshing, Violet protects Andarna and bonds two dragons
During Threshing, Violet finds Jack, Oren, and Tynan planning to kill a small golden feathertail dragon. She intervenes. Xaden is present as an observer, but the rules prevent him from simply fighting the first-years for her.
Violet wounds Jack, who flees, and fights the others. The black dragon Tairn arrives, kills Tynan, and chooses Violet. She refuses to kill the unconscious Oren.
Back on the flight field, the golden dragon, Andarna, also tells Violet that she has chosen her. The dragons allow both bonds to stand. Because Tairn is mated to Xaden's dragon Sgaeyl, Violet's survival is now connected to Xaden's through their dragons.
An attack in Violet's room exposes Andarna's time-stopping power
Unbonded cadets, including Oren, attack Violet while she is asleep. Amber helped them gain access to her room. Andarna briefly stops time, allowing Violet to escape Oren's hold. Xaden arrives and kills the attackers.
Violet and Xaden learn that feathertails are young dragons. Andarna's time-stopping ability is a temporary gift she can share, rather than Violet's signet. The dragons keep this secret because humans could drain and kill their young by taking too much power.
When Violet identifies Amber, Dain initially refuses to believe her. Tairn shares Violet's memory of the attack, proving Amber's involvement, and executes her. Xaden assigns his foster brother Liam Mairi to protect Violet.
Violet trains with Liam and Imogen and grows closer to Xaden
Liam becomes Violet's friend as well as her guard. Imogen helps her build strength. Violet repeatedly falls from Tairn during flight training, and Xaden eventually has a saddle made that lets her ride securely.
Violet and Xaden are attracted to each other and begin kissing. Their dragons' bond also allows them to communicate mentally. Violet rejects the idea of a romance with Dain, whose insistence that she leave the quadrant conflicts with her decision to stay.
During Archive duty, Violet notices that information presented in Battle Brief does not always match the records. Her father's book of fables, which describes venin and wyvern, is also absent from the supposedly comprehensive Archives.
The squad visits Mira at Montserrat
Violet's squad wins the Squad Battle after stealing a useful military map from her mother's office. Their reward is a visit to an active outpost. At Montserrat, Violet reunites with Mira and joins Rhiannon on a visit to her family.
Mira returns the book of fables their father left for Violet. Xaden joins the group because Tairn and Sgaeyl cannot comfortably remain separated for long.
Gryphon fliers attack after the local wards fail. Mira orders the cadets to evacuate, and Xaden ensures Violet leaves. Back at Basgiath, Violet waits for confirmation that Mira survived.
Violet manifests lightning while saving Liam from Jack
Jack attacks Liam during a War Games exercise and knocks him from his dragon. Andarna stops time so Tairn can catch him. Violet manifests lightning, strikes the tower where Jack is positioned, and believes she has killed him. Liam survives this encounter.
Professor Carr begins training Violet to use her signet. She can produce lightning but struggles to aim it.
Violet and Xaden become lovers. He explains that the scars on his back represent the rebel children for whom he accepted responsibility after their parents' executions. Their survival in the quadrant was part of that bargain. Violet wants a relationship rather than sex without commitment; after further conflict, they resume their relationship on Reunification Day.
The final War Games assignment sends them outside the wards
Colonel Aetos assigns Xaden to Athebyne, an outpost beyond Navarre's protective wards. Xaden takes Violet, Liam, and a group of marked riders. Dain objects to Violet going.
Near Athebyne, gryphon fliers meet Xaden. Violet discovers that he has been supplying them with weapons against venin. The venin and their wyvern are real, and Navarre's leadership has concealed their attacks on people outside its wards.
Athebyne has been evacuated. A message from Colonel Aetos leaves the group with the choice of abandoning a nearby trading post or remaining to face the attack. Xaden asks about Dain touching Violet's face; they realize he has been reading her memories without permission and that information about Xaden's movements has reached his father.
At Resson, Liam and Soleil die and Violet is poisoned
The riders choose to help defend Resson alongside the gryphon fliers. Venin attack with wyvern. Ordinary weapons are ineffective against them; the riders use special alloy daggers and Violet's lightning.
Soleil and her dragon are killed. Liam's dragon Deigh is mortally wounded, which means Liam will die too. Violet stays with him, and he asks her to look after his younger sister, Sloane.
A venin stabs Violet with a poisoned blade during the aerial battle. When Violet kills her, the wyvern tied to that venin also die. The riders use this connection to fight the remaining attackers. Andarna lends Violet her time-stopping power again, and Violet and Xaden kill the remaining venin threatening them. The poison overwhelms Violet.
Violet wakes in Aretia and finds Brennan alive
Xaden takes Violet to Aretia rather than back to Basgiath. Three days later, she wakes in the Tyrrish city she believed had been destroyed. Her wound has been mended.
Violet agrees to help fight the venin but no longer trusts Xaden after discovering the secrets he and her dragons kept. He says he loves her and intends to earn back her trust.
Brennan enters the room. He is alive, has been helping the revolution, and welcomes Violet to it. His return is the final reveal of the book.
