Kingdom of Ash Ending Explained
Aelin survives forging the Lock but loses almost all her magic. Erawan remains in Erilea and must still be killed. Yrene destroys him with help from Dorian, Elide, and Lysandra, while Aelin and her cadre defeat Maeve. Aelin is crowned in Terrasen after the war.
Full spoilers for the complete Throne of Glass series, including the epilogue. This explanation follows the final sacrifices, the Lock, the last battle, and the survivors' futures.
Why the Thirteen sacrifice themselves
During the siege of Orynth, Morath's forces repair a witch tower that can destroy Terrasen's defenses. Asterin and the other eleven members of Manon's coven attack it while Manon remains with the injured Abraxos.
They perform the Yielding inside the tower, releasing their power in a fatal blast. It destroys the tower and a large part of the enemy army. Asterin also kills the Blackbeak Matron.
Twelve members of the Thirteen die. Manon and Abraxos survive. The sacrifice buys Orynth more time; it does not kill Erawan or end the war immediately.
How Aelin and Dorian attempt to forge the Lock
Dorian retrieves the third Wyrdkey from Morath and reunites with Aelin. Their allies vote to forge the Lock before continuing to Orynth. Rowan proposes that Aelin and Dorian share the cost, hoping neither will have to die.
The keys take them into an in-between realm and begin draining their power. The plan to divide the price is not enough. The spirit of Dorian's father appears and offers his remaining power. Aelin sends Dorian back so he can live and rule Adarlan, then completes the work with his father's help.
Aelin reaches the gods with her fire depleted. What follows is a second confrontation over the bargain.
Why Erawan is not taken away with the gods
The original agreement was that the gods would take Erawan with them when the Lock opened their route home. Aelin tries to change the terms: she asks them to spare Elena's soul in exchange for leaving Erawan behind for her allies to face.
Deanna destroys Elena's soul anyway. The gods cross into their own realm without removing Erawan. The Lock therefore does not deliver the promised solution to the war.
Mala gives Aelin a final gift of fire. Aelin opens a passage from a hellish realm into the gods' world, trapping them with the consequences, and seals the Wyrdgates. Erawan's brothers can no longer use the keys to invade Erilea.
How Aelin survives, and what magic she keeps
Aelin falls through other worlds on her way back. Rowan's Wyrdmark tattoos give her a route home. During the fall, a winged male in another world slows her descent; readers of the other Maas books can recognize the crossover.
She returns alive with only a small remnant of fire and her inherited trace of water magic. Paying the Lock's price also removes her mortal lifespan, leaving her able to live as Fae. She has not retained the enormous reserve of fire she used earlier in the series.
She must consequently fight the final battle using limited power, allies, and deception. Forging the Lock happens before Maeve and Erawan are defeated.
How Gavriel dies at Orynth
Aelin's army reaches Orynth before its defenders are overrun. During the battle, Gavriel helps Aedion hold the western gate. He goes beyond the gate, closes it behind him, and fights the attackers outside so they cannot enter.
Aedion sees his father die there. Afterward, Aelin honors Gavriel with the blood oath in death. Gavriel's death protects the city but leaves his relationship with Aedion unfinished.
How Yrene and the others kill Erawan
Aelin creates doubt between Erawan and Maeve and draws his attention to the healers in Orynth. Erawan leaves Maeve to pursue the person he believes is Yrene.
The apparent Yrene is Dorian using shapeshifting. He lures Erawan into a Wyrdmark trap. Lysandra and Elide help hold him; Elide pins him with Damaris. The real Yrene arrives and uses healing magic, supported by Dorian's power, to destroy the Valg king.
Before Erawan dies, Dorian demands his father's erased name. The answer is Dorian: the former king and his son share the name.
How Maeve is killed
Outside the city, Maeve traps Rowan, Lorcan, and Fenrys in illusions. Aelin uses her remaining fire to burn them and bring their attention back to reality. Wyrdmarks also bring the lost Fae of Terrasen into the battle against Maeve's forces.
Aelin, Rowan, and Lorcan attack Maeve together. Fenrys teleports behind her and drives Goldryn through her. Aelin then puts the protective ring associated with Athril and Silba onto Maeve's finger. Its power damages her from within, and Aelin beheads her.
Maeve and Erawan are both dead. Their defeat ends the central Valg threat, and the survivors can begin rebuilding.
Who ends up with whom, and where they go

In the epilogue, spring follows a winter of rebuilding. Kingsflame blooms across Terrasen. The surviving characters have homes and governments to restore; the Thirteen, Gavriel, and Elena are not brought back.
