Ending explained · The War of Lost Hearts, book 3
Nura is killed during the battle for Ara. The greater crisis continues because the Lejaras are tearing apart the underlying magic of the world. Aefe and Caduan use them to seal deep magic, sacrificing themselves. Max and Tisaanah survive and help rebuild Ara.
Full spoilers for the completed War of Lost Hearts trilogy, including the epilogue.
The Lejaras give access to creation, change, and death. Repeatedly exploiting that power damages the structure of deep magic. By the final battle, the danger extends beyond which army wins: the world's magical foundations are coming apart.
Caduan has secretly possessed the creation Lejara. He used its power to give Aefe a body and to create his shades. Channeling it has corrupted his own body, and he admits that he is dying.
Nura escapes Fey captivity and steals that Lejara. She uses it to raise an army of corpses. She also sends Ishqa's reanimated body, carrying Lightning Dust, to Max and Tisaanah. The explosion destroys the Towers and shatters the Lejara of Change kept there. Max and Tisaanah survive.
Before the final assault, Iya marries Max and Tisaanah in the palace gardens, with Sammerin as witness. The ceremony uses Tisaanah's language and traditions. They are already married when they fight the last battle.
Nura's fleet and the Fey forces then converge on Ara. Max and Tisaanah face an attack from the reanimated dead as well as Caduan's army.
At a parley, Nura demands that Max join her against the Fey. Max stabs her, but she uses the Lejara to trigger an explosion. Tisaanah teleports herself and Max away.
Nura survives that encounter. Later, Max confronts her at the ruined Towers and stabs her again as she reaches for her power. Tisaanah arrives and cuts her throat with Il'Sahaj. Max takes the creation Lejara.
Nura's death does not immediately stop the reanimated army. Vardir's warning explains the remaining problem: all three Lejaras must be brought together to repair the damage to deep magic. Killing Nura has removed a commander, but it has not repaired that damage.
Max connects Ilyzath's references to its missing pieces with the Lejaras. He and Tisaanah take the creation Lejara and the fragments of change there, seeking the third source, death.
Ilyzath traps them in separate visions. They break free, but Caduan reaches Max inside the prison. Caduan wants the Lejaras for his own purposes and refuses Max's warning about the world collapsing.
Caduan impales Max and takes the Lejara. Tisaanah reaches Max, binds his wound, and helps him continue deeper into Ilyzath. He is dying when they reach the final chamber.
The death Lejara appears as a tree in a black pool. Caduan reaches it with the other Lejaras. Aefe follows him and initially stands between Tisaanah and Caduan.
Tisaanah opens her mind to Aefe. She shows her the love behind Caduan's actions and the destruction his revenge will cause. She gives Aefe the broken pieces of the change Lejara and asks her to repair what is breaking.
When the three Lejaras come together, Aefe and Caduan are drawn into the deepest magic. Aefe makes Caduan confront the damage. He recognizes that continuing his plan will destroy the world he is trying to avenge.
They choose to close the ruptures and seal deep magic. Aefe's restored body depends on the power being sealed, so she cannot survive that decision. Caduan goes with her.
Tisaanah and the badly wounded Max contribute their remaining Valtain and Solarie magic to help complete the work. Aefe and Caduan finish it together and pass through death together. Max does not kill Caduan.
Max and Tisaanah wake outside Ilyzath alive. The marks connecting them to deep magic have disappeared, Max's eyes are brown again, and the reanimated army is gone.
The Fey are led by Meajqa after Caduan's death. He negotiates a ceasefire with Max and Tisaanah, and the Fey fleet withdraws.
Max disbands the Orders. Tare reveals that Queen Sesri's death was staged to protect her from Zeryth and Nura, creating a way to restore legitimate government with a senate. Max helps establish a school for magic wielders at the Farlione estate. Tisaanah develops a guild to protect vulnerable people.
They visit the remains of their cottage and plan to rebuild. The epilogue confirms that they have a daughter and a son. Their work and family life continue alongside the effects of their past trauma.
